Eco Projects (2005-2009)

1)      Community Shared Agriculture (CSA)

Community Shared Agriculture (CSA) is a mutually beneficial relationship between farmers and members of the community that value organic produce. CSA members receive a wide variety of organic food delivered to a convenient location throughout the growing season.

2)      Community Voice & Healthy Food Healthy Families

The goal of the Community Voice and Healthy Food Healthy Families program is to improve the quality of life of low-income families and individuals in East Hants through access to healthy, organic food; skills enhancement; and the development of community capacity. The Community Voice Program has been in existence since 2000 and the Healthy Food Healthy Families program is new as of 2007 in Partnership with Kids Action Program and Building Blocks in Kennetcook and with Colchester East Hants Health Authority. By encouraging participants to meet monthly throughout the winter, spring, and summer, and facilitating a process of identifying community needs and assets, we aim to increase participant's ownership and decision-making power. SunRoot meets the vegetable needs of participants from June to October. Participants have stated that it is very difficult to make healthy food choices on the small food budget that they receive each month. We would like to work with participants to build creative solutions to community needs.

3) Creation of a Local Food Guide

Supporting local food is an important way to encourage sustainable development in regional communities. Benefits can include increased accessible green space, communities in better health, more farmers and food workers that can make a living from their work, more money staying in local economies, an increase in the volume and quality of local food, and fostering a sense of community. In order to promote local food production, consumers need to understand these benefits and know where farms and local markets are located. Through this project we will compile a local foods guide that includes general information about local food, a map of the region and information about each of the businesses and organizations highlighted.
